Elephants In Empty Rooms
2-min read
I wanted to share something that’s been on my mind—something I hope brings you a bit of peace and clarity.
Sometimes, life gives us different versions of reality. Imagine two people looking at the same room: one sees it as empty, while the other insists there’s an elephant in it.
The person who “sees” the elephant believes it’s there, adding details that shape their view, even if it’s not real. It made me think of how we all do this, creating our own “elephants” that sometimes add more stress than peace.
I wonder if we’d feel lighter by letting go of what isn’t truly there—worries, assumptions, and fears that creep in, creating “elephants” where we might need an open space.
Here are a few thoughts to ease these “additions” and find clarity:
Question Your Thoughts
Our minds often spin “storylines”—worries or interpretations that aren’t fully grounded in what’s real. If you notice tension or doubt, try asking yourself: Is this real? Am I bringing peace or stress to this situation? Just becoming aware of these thoughts can feel like a small kindness toward yourself.
Separating Facts from Feelings
When something feels heavy, I try this: I make two lists—one with the facts and the other with my interpretations, emotions, or fears. It’s surprising how often I notice extra “weight” I’ve added that doesn’t need to be there. This exercise helps me let go of what might not serve me.
Supporting Someone Who’s Seeing the Elephant
Since we all see “elephants” sometimes, patience goes a long way. Showing trust and understanding can help someone feel safe as they work through their own process of letting go.
Finding Peace
Next time life feels heavy, pause and ask: Is this an elephant I’m bringing into an empty room? Letting go of what’s not truly there can make space for clarity, peace, and even a little joy.
